One more time.
If I could talk to you one more time,
I’d tell you to stay.
I’d ask what your favorite color was, because I thought I knew but I was never really sure.
I’d ask how many National Parks you’d been to and which one was your favorite.
I’d ask where you salvaged your wood from.
How you knew which pieces were worth saving.
I’d ask if you had ever truly been in love, because I think you would be honest with me, even if you didn’t like your own answer.
I would ask if you had ever truly known peace. And remind you that it was worth fighting for.
If I could talk to you one more time,
I’d ask you to stay
And I would understand when you said you couldn’t.
And when you said it was time to go,
I would give you a piece of my soul as a parting gift
And ask you to keep it safe until we could meet again.
