Behind door number 2 is… 4 chicks

two week old chicks

On Sunday, June 2nd, 4 days after my brother took his life, I was walking around the back of their house and heard chirping. I opened the door leading to a storage area connected to the house and guess what I find….four, two week old baby chicks. SERIOUSLY??? I just had just figured out how to handle the puppies a few days ago and now this? Not only were they in this storage area with a heat lamp in already 90 degree temps but they had no food or water. They were not doing well. One of the chicks did not make it overnight. At that moment, on a Sunday night, all I could do was get them fresh food and water and try and figure out what to do with them. I had no idea how to even begin to care for chicks.

Thankfully, one of my favorite people, Kelli, came to my rescue. Kelli connected me with Olivia, who runs Sunshine Animal Sanctuary and she happened to have a mama who just had some chicks and there was a good chance she would adopt these guys. I was able to bring the chicks there Monday morning and on top of Olivia being an incredible human I was so impressed by everything she is doing at the Sanctuary. If you are in the Wendell, NC area and love flowers, I highly recommend checking her out, she has the best!

I am thrilled to report that the chicks were happily adopted by mama and are thriving.
